Discard your job title

@ Judy Mae Bingman

I never use my job title when I introduce myself.

It means little to people outside your organization. And, how many of us actually do what our job title implies?

Instead of reciting your HR job title, tell others how you add value the organization.

“I’m Judy, and every day I tell the Extension story.”

At this point of introduction, most folks don’t need to know how you accomplish what you do. They just need to know how you might help them during their interaction with your company. Let’s make that easier.

Value vs. tasks

  • Instead of Extension county director, use “I manage people and resources for the local Extension office.”

  • Instead of office support staff, use “I ensure local inquiries are directed to the right professional who can help resolve problems.”

  • Instead of family life educator, use “I help families thrive.”

All of us elevate the work of our organization in some way. Determine your part of the whole and lead with that.
